What a day! This memorable event at Abu Beach in Nago was more than just a pleasant afternoon; it was a vibrant display of the power of community, connection, and the joy of getting to meet new people while being surrounded by nature in a small knit community. Looking back, the memories created and the bonds strengthened serve as a beautiful reminder of why spending time with like minded people is so incredibly vital.

The beach buzzed with an infectious energy from the moment it began. It was heartwarming to see such a diverse tapestry of people coming together: Abu locals chatting with OIST faculty, travelers sharing stories with long-time Okinawa residents, and friends reconnecting after time apart. This beautiful mix highlighted the inherent human desire for connection, a desire that transcends geographical boundaries and cultural differences.

For those of us living away from our home countries, these moments of community are like anchors in the vast ocean of a new culture. They provide a sense of belonging, a place where we can share experiences, find support, and build lasting friendships. More importantly, these events offer children an invaluable lesson in the beauty of interconnectedness. They witness firsthand how people from different backgrounds can come together, celebrate shared interests, and contribute to a stronger, more vibrant society. The smiles on their faces as they explored the beach, tried indigo dyeing for the first time, created an artwork and visited artists’ stalls, spoke volumes about the joy of being part of something bigger than themselves.

A significant aspect of the day was the tangible demonstration of community responsibility. The beach clean, organized by the wonderful Nati Ishigaki and owner of @tulipan.okinawa in collaboration with Yukino Kinjo of @manatiiworld, saw enthusiastic volunteers collecting heaps of ocean debris. This collective effort underscored the importance of caring for our shared environment and set a powerful example for the younger generation about the impact of community action.
After the kiddos played the break the watermelon game, the atmosphere shifted to one of pure magic with Lina’s @fire_by_pyro’s fire spinning show illuminating the twilight, captivating everyone. The mesmerizing dance of fire and later the rising moon created a truly unforgettable experience, a perfect culmination to a day filled with connection and joy.

Let’s carry forward the spirit of the mini matsuri. Let’s continue to support our local communities, keep our beautiful beaches clean, and always strive to spread good vibes wherever we go. Until we gather again, let’s keep doing things like this and striving to cultivate the sense of belonging that makes our lives here in Okinawa so special.
